Michael Lacey

Michael Thoreau Lacey is an American mathematician who was born on September 26 of 1959. He has achieved quite a few astonishing things throughout his life. One of the first and major achievements was receiving his Ph.D. which he got through the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This was in the year of 1987 and was under the guidance of his mentor, Walter Philipp.

Once he received his Ph.D., he became known for he long existing theories, one of which still stands and is quite unbelievable to those who study what Lacey spoke about. His main theory was in the area of probability in Banach spaces. He also ended up solving a problem relating to the law of iterated logarithm for empirical characteristic functions, which sounds quite complicated to the average person, and it is nothing short of that. It really takes quite an experienced man to be able to solve something so complex.

From theories and his Ph.D., Lacey even went on to get his postdoctoral position at Louisiana State University and also University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. When he and his mentor were at the University of North Carolina, they gave their own proof of the almost certain central limit theorem.

Lacey ended up holding his position at Indiana University from 1989 through 1996. While he was there, he later received his National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship. He soon went out and began to study the bilinear Hilbert transform, which again is quite complex and not something the average person, let along mathematician could figure out.

Now we fast forward into the future to where he is at today. From 1996 to today’s present day, Lacey has been a devote Professor of Mathematics at the Georgia Institute of Technology. But throughout these years from 1996 to today’s present day, he has still been receiving more and more achievements which includes one in 2004 which was a Guggenheim Fellowship. This Fellowship was for the work he did with a peer by the name of Xiaochun Li. Then again in 2012, he became a fellow of the American Mathematical Society.

Michael Lacey is not your average mathematician and this is easily proved by all of the great work he has done over the years. Lacey still is achieving greatness to this day and is constantly defying the limits of what we have ever thought would be possible today.
